How To Protect Your Energy

A spiritual empath’s guide to energy protection.

Start Your Day With Intention

A mindful morning is key to a productive day. The best tip? Avoid that morning scroll. Instead, start your day by playing your favourite song and taking some deep breaths. Set an intention for the day ahead that centres your self-love and empowerment. What do you want to achieve today? How do you want to feel? What’s not going to get in your way?

Write your intention in your phone, stick it to your laptop screen or write it at the top of your to-do list and let that good energy flow all day.

Carry A Piece Of Amethyst

Amethyst is a highly protective crystal and will absorb any heavy, negative energy before it has a chance to latch onto us. As a natural tranquiliser, Amethyst will support our inner peace by combating any feelings of stress or worry that arise within us, making it an incredible mental health support. Pop a piece in your bra, keep it a piece in your bedroom or wear it as a necklace.

Black Tourmaline and Selenite are also great crystals for grounding, support and protection.

Harness The Power of Awareness

In order to protect our energy, we need to get clear on our boundaries... Really, really clear! What’s a hard ‘no’ for you? What are you no longer willing to sacrifice, compromise or negotiate on?

Protecting our energy comes from awareness and action. So once you’ve decided on those boundaries, it’s time to bring more awareness into where your energy is going. Who and what empowers you? Who and what drains you or leaves you feeling heavy and depleted?

Write an honest list, then take small action steps each day to honour your own energy. Don’t be afraid to push back, say no and distance yourself from anyone or anything that no longer aligns with who you are becoming.

Cleanse With Herbal Smoke

Smoke cleansing is the powerful, medicinal practice of burning herbs to energetically cleanse our space, protect ourselves from negative energy, lift our mood, and heal our body from dis-ease.

Not to be confused with the Indigenous ritual practice of ‘smudging’, Smoke Cleansing is a centuries old tradition that many countries, cultures and religions have adapted in their own way, many of which are still used today. As we consider adopting these practices, it's important for us to be mindful of where our herbs originate and protect the culture they are rooted in. The recent, heightened interest in ‘smudging’ has led to the over-harvesting of some sacred, traditional herbs used by the Indigenous community of North America, who are now beginning to see these herbs fade from their landscape as farmers struggle to keep up with mainstream demand.

Although we can appreciate and learn from different cultures and their traditional practices, creating our own blends is an appropriate alternative that allows us to connect and honour the energy of our local and homegrown herbs, while also being sustainable and respectful.

For peace & protection, try a weekly cleanse with Mugwort, Juniper, Lavender or Rosemary.

Repeat, “I am safe. I am protected. My energy is mine.”

Try A Simple Protection Spell

This one can be done anytime, anywhere – making it the perfect tool for shaking off any projected energy.

To start, close your eyes and begin taking some deep, cleansing breaths. Try inhaling for six counts and exhaling for eight counts to regulate the nervous system and slow the heart rate down.

Next, bring to mind your favourite colour.

Now with each inhale, visualise that colour flows into your body and forms a protective layer around you. See it filling up your aura and energy field – radiating from you in every direction.

Repeat, “I am safe. I am protected. My energy is mine.”

End Your Day With A Ritual Bath

This is a powerful reset for the mind, body and soul.

Medicinally, the skin is our body’s largest organ, and it absorbs whatever we put on it. An aromatic, herbal bath is a natural medicine, rich with nutrients and antioxidants. It supports the detoxification process of the lymphatic system, it lowers blood pressure, it improves our immune system function and protects us from infection and dis-ease. It can aid painful skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, it makes our hair grow stronger and healthier and boosts our complexion – this list could go on and on.

Alongside the emotional and physical benefits, a ritual bath is an energetic rebirth; it balances the energetic frequency of our body, cleanses the aura and releases negative or emotional blocks. It’s a transformational tool which can completely reset our energy in less than 30-minutes!

Here are some of my favourite recipes:

For detoxing:

  • Squeeze 0.5 of a fresh lemon

  • Add 5 drops of eucalyptus oil or three stems of the plant

  • 3 tablespoons of ground ginger

  • 1 cup of Epsom salts

  • 0.5 cup of apple cider vinegar

For deeper sleep and stress relief:

  • 8-10 drops of lavender oil

  • 3 drops frankincense

  • 3 drops cedarwood

  • 1 cup of magnesium salts

For aiding anxiety and balancing hormones:

  • A handful of dandelion flowers

  • 5 drops of Jasmine oil, or fresh Jasmine if you have it

  • 3 drops clary sage

  • 3 drops geranium

  • 1 cup of pink Himalayan salts

Additional adds for skincare benefits:

  • Adding 1 cup of oatmeal or 1 cup of a dairy-free milk (I  prefer coconut or almond) to your bath will relieve dry skin and help manage skin conditions or sunburn.

  • Apple cider vinegar is an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and can gentle exfoliate the skin by dissolving dead skin cells

  • Adding salts to your soak will improve circulation, boosting the complexion on your skin. They also relieve dry, itchy skin.
